Actually, except in the finder, I don't think that this has changed. There were two different behaviors in MacOS 9 (with one major exception), and there are two behaviors in MacOS X:

In icon views the <shift> key allows additional selection/deselection, and in list views (other than in the finder) it is the "select from the previous point until the new point" modifier. Apple has simplified things, and eliminated the special case in the finder. I always found this exception in the finder annoying.
