Best way to display window?

Greetings and happy turkey day!

I have an app i'm working on that runs in the background and adds a StatusItem i'm having trouble with a window i'm calling to let the user add info i used the makeKeyAndOrderFront call to create the window and display it but if they click on the desktop it disappears and then the menu doesn't work for the status item? whats the best way to create and destroy this window?
