My apologies. I should have searched the archives first. It slipped my mind (probably because it was so late at night). That being said, the replies I've received were exactly what i was looking for. Thanks very much!

I am wondering what the best way is to generate globally unique ids in

to bring in the entire framework just for that. Is there anything
simpler that will provide globally unique ids?

If you look in the list archives you'll find a lot of convenience
methods to do this. Search for UUID.
