Is reassigning via convenience methods , in the same method, okay?

Thanks

That's fine.

Objects created with convenience methods are (mostly) autoreleased... as long as you don't plan to keep any of the data outside the scope of the current method, you should be golden as the "spare" NSString will just be dealloc'ed automatically when the autorelease pool fires.
