Just in case you haven't already, please make sure you tell Apple about the kernel panic; you shouldn't get kernel panics even if AppKit (or whatever else you are using) isn't thread safe. The URL for reporting bugs is

If you can give it to them, I'm sure they would appreciate the source code for your program if it reliably triggers a kernel panic.
