Gary, taken to its logical conclusion, your position requires that you discard any software on your system that was given away for free, or risk being a hypocrite. On my mac that would include gcc, perl, the bsd subsystem, apache, sendmail, emacs --- hmm, that's not going to leave much. Come to think of it, when you're all done your machine won't even boot. I'd be happy to take it off your hands, and I'll even pay you a token sum so you'll be able to hold your head high and say you never gave anything away for free.

I have a fundemental problem with your request. Giving your work away for
free sends a message that:
1) Software is easy to write
2) Anyone who charges for their stuff is obviously trying to get rich on the
backs of others
3) All software should be free

That is a HUGE dis-service to those of us who write software for a living.

That's absurd. That's like saying that I, as a musician, cannot compose a piece of music, and then release it for free, because it would hurt people who sell music for a living, or that, a painter cannot paint something, and then give it away, because it somehow undermines the livelihood of people who sell their paintings. Giving away software only hurts people who don't write software that is compelling enough to pay for. For the record, I write software for a living.

Please reconsider your request. After you've identified something worth
writing (not a trivial task on its own), ask people to pay for it.
