I have to agree. It isn't readily apparent that you might need to take
account of the key-value coding implementation when implementing your
classes. OK, there has been a lot of traffic on this list about KVC
and its effects (as well as this precise problem), but newbies probably
won't have read all of that, and it isn't obvious from the symptoms
what the problem is (at least, not unless you are already aware of the
KVC stuff).
I have added a section in my unofficial FAQ, 3.7.4, that specifically
covers this issue. Unfortunately I can't add links to the
documentation at the moment, because I can't get at the Apple Developer
Site at the moment for some reason.
Anyway, if you're interested, take a look at
