Then why should you expect Apple to have time to fix it?
Because it's their job!
What I mean is that sending beta versions to the developers is a good
thing for both Apple and the developers. But any professional software
must also undergo professional beta testing, i.e. have a very precise
checklist of features to test and their desired behavior, and that list
is derived from the software's specifications, precisely because a
group of normal users will never use 100% of the implemented features.
And I doubt Xcode has undergone this process, since this bug is both
very easy to produce and very severe in its consequences (I had been
using it for 15 minutes, and only its basic features).
(Just for the image, Airbus will crash -- on purpose and from the
ground -- the first two assembled A380 in order to verify their
calculations about the resistance of the materials. They won't just let
a test pilot fly it, give his impressions -- yeah, that's fast and it
actually flies, perfect job, guys! --, and validate the plane. Because
it's not the test pilot's job to validate the security, he's just
helping at it.)
Seriously, you should report any bugs you find, otherwise they might
not get fixed. The bug reporter isn't really that hard to use, and it
doesn't take that long to fill-in.
Well, OK, I'll be a good Apple citizen anyway, but what does the
government? ;-)
*Any* developer should be pleased to accept bug reports from their
users. If you are claiming that you write perfect code and can
feasibly test 100% of possible scenarios before release, then I'm
sorry, but I don't believe you.
Of course I don't write perfect code and I'm always pleased to receive
bug reports. But I don't *expect* my users to do it. In final release
software, a bug should be an exception, and not something that "can
happen, you know..."
When I see that new crash dialog, I feel like I'm using weak software.
Just a matter of feeling.
Other than that, I'm very pleased with Xcode. I've finally got rid of
all those Project Builder windows cluttering my desktop (Exposi has
come too late!). Just -- I can't get the completion to work. It behaves
as if the index were not complete (it mostly suggests terms taken out
from enum definitions and Cocoa class names, but no methods), however
the class brower and the help window provide complete information. Did
I miss something?
