Yes, you're right, it would be more useful if it passed the bug report to the developer of the application (rather than just Apple). But even so, it's hardly "a stupid move", especially as the majority of people won't file bugs unless prompted (even developers like Ambroise ;->).

I'm curious now as to how useful these built-in bug reporting mechanisms have been for others. I put them into most of my programs a few years ago, and from memory didn't get more than two or three reports (over two years). In fake, most people still emailed me the old fashioned way, even knowing of the new facility. Does this cold reception sound familiar to anyone else?

Personally, I always file a bug report if I think it will be well received. I would have thought there would be others out there with similar sentiments, but apparently not.

Yep, me.

That, or my software was all bug free - which of course it wasn't. But people don't even seem to bother trying to reporting a bug once, let alone over and over.

People often just don't trigger them; it's quite surprising. One of the bits of software I had out there, WinPager, which was a desktop switcher for MS Windows, had a fairly major bug where it could completely lock a machine (caused, I think, by some internal synchronisation in Windows, because I had several people walk through all of the code and they didn't find any problems in the program itself). It didn't happen often, but it happened enough that when I decided I couldn't find it, I pulled the download from my website. To my astonishment, I never received a single complaint from a user about the problem, and after pulling the download, I got several requests to put it back up ;-)

P.S. Example - Mail just deleted the cc address for absolutely no reason other than I selected it. If there were a button here to report a bug, I might be tempted to click it, even though I know Apple will most certainly ignore it. Does no one else have such an irrational craving for bug reporting?

I know I do :-) I absolutely loved that button on Safari (and the menu option, which is still there). I think all apps. should have a "Report a bug..." option.

Kind regards,

Alastair.
