I'm learning on how to take a screen shot using Cocoa, but I've noticed that many screen capture applications cannot capture a DVD window playing, yet it can grab the rest of the screen just fine. What is the difference between DVD playback and the rest of the screen (whether it be just the background, or even some other movie file, such as an .avi or .asf playing)?

It's probably being done in a video overlay surface. Apple will have to do this, because the DVD people won't license their encryption (or keys) to any software that doesn't decode into an off-screen overlay, because they don't want people to be able to grab the screen. Personally, I think the entire thing's a fiasco anyway, what with freely available libraries that can quickly crack the encryption (takes less than 20 seconds on a 1.2GHz Athlon running Linux) but that's the way it is.

Kind regards,

Alastair.
