I agree with everything else you said, but, having seen comments
similar to the above many times, I still don't really understand it.
Do you have some examples or cases of how people determine such a thing
and come out with an actual number? I've come to the conclusion that
"binary search" takes far too long...not to mention being extra tough
with a moving target. :-)
For myself, I start with an equation of how much I reasonably
need/want/expect to earn in a year and a loading factor for what % of
the year will likely be billable. Reduce it to 'per hour' or 'per day'
and that's the starting point that may get modified depending on how
interesting a job sounds or what I think of the customer (most
"community-type" non-profits can expect a discount).
Also, in my vocabulary, "freelance" tends to mean things I do on spec
for no particular client, but which might be marketable. ...don't know
if that's a reasonable definition.
