I'll raise you one here: You not only can't assume a client will
provide equipment, in general you shouldn't let them.
In the USA, one of the "20 questions" used by the IRS to determine
whether you're acting as an independent contractor or as an employee of
your client is whether you're providing your own equipment. (The
questions are generally related to whether your work is self-directed
or directed by the client.)
If you use Usenet, there's a great little newsgroup where lots of these
types of issues are discussed:

To keep this somewhat on-topic: Cocoa is *great* for small independent
firms doing consulting, because a very small number of good people can
work for a relatively short time (at a nice high bill rate) and do
something great for a client. It makes "two guys in a garage" feasible
again, both for product development and for professional services.
