I would like to have a routine pause for some number of seconds. I have looked at NSTimer and it does not appear to fit what I need. Is there some other class or routine I could use? Our am I reading the NSTimer doc's incorrectly?

It's not clear what you mean by "pause". If you want the program to stop everything for a certain amount of time, look at the UNIX sleep() function.

If you want something to happen after a given amount of time, you can send any object a -performSelector:afterDelay:cancelPrevious: message.

NSTimer is a little more general-purpose than that, providing periodic events for things like animation, as well as one-shot events.
