OK, a little background can only help. I am writing a specialized word processor that keeps track of a lot of information beyond the text itself. Eventually, until the world adopts my program as a standard, people need to be able to dump the raw text data so that other word processors can use it. However, that exported data is completely useless to my program. Once the RTF or TXT data is exported, it can no longer be edited by my software. That means that when a user selects Save As they would not be able to edit the document they just saved; they would still be editing the original. This is true of any software that has write-only formats.

Unfortunately for me, I have not been able to come up with a dramatically better name for the action in my program than "Export". I have modified it to say "Export Text", but that feels like upgrading the description of Earth from "harmless" to "mostly harmless". It doesn't really make it as intuitively obvious as "compile" does. Of course, naming the action "compile" assumes your user is familiar with the name of the process for creating an object file.

Jerry,

I can't find the original posting of this thread... it's probably got delayed on some mail server, that seems to happen a lot recently, that I get answers before the questions.

What exactly is your command doing? What kind of text does it export from where? Would "Extract Text" make sense? "Generate Text"?
