Well....

If you're using the document architecture

I'd load it as normal, but set the filename and type to nil, so that when you save you can then handle it all.

but basically, the place to ask this is when you present a save panel.. strip off the .rtf, and then use it as the suggested filename, perhaps with the new extension appended.
