Folks,

Thanks for all your very useful comments on and off-list on this matter,
and apologies for the slight OT-ness of it. My experience of writing for
multi-CPU architectures is certainly in need of a lot of updating...
I think a quick bit of semaphore action is going to be the way out, plus
making the shared variables volatile.
