different launch methods

Hi list,
Is there a way to tell the difference (programatically) between :
-the launch of a document based app and the clicking the open button in the menu
AND
-the launch of a document based app when a file is dragged onto its icon ?

I just can't figure a way to do this else than changing the open method in the menu for one that i would write..;
I thought maybe there was an easier way of doing this that i would not be aware of...
if anyone has an idea ;)

Thanks in advance

Damien Pacaud
