As long as the process that returns this name is launched by (or in the name of) the user, it should be able to communicate the proper information to your code. I think the big point you are going to have to adjust to is that you will need two processes, one to load the preferences into the driver (run as root), and the other to tell that process where to look (run as the user in question).
You should also watch out that fairly soon MacOS X will be able to have two different people logging into the GUI at the same time, running their own processes, so you could get two different user preference sets trying to load at the same time.
