It seems like this might be a good suggestion to provide an option
as part of the Account information. A checkbox whether to show the

keep folks from actually changing the contents.
God, no! Why make things a pain in the ass for those who need to go
inside a package? There are many reasons to do this that the author
may not have thought of ahead of time. For example, take a launcher
like DragThing. Maybe the user wants to go inside the app bundle and
change the Info.plist so it is an LSUIElement and doesn't take up a
space in the Dock. There are many legitimate reasons to go inside the
app bundle, and making this difficult just creates an annoyance for
users.
I go in iChat and add a Opt-P shortcut for hiding the participants
window to the main menu NIB. (Although I suppose I could use the
Keyboard Shortcuts control panel for that; haven't tried it.)
First - I'm talking about something that would likely be for a
multi-user environment where you're administrating the machine.
Providing an option to disable isn't the same as not allowing you to do
it.
Second - In order to change things you have to have Admin access
anyway. I never said the functionality wasn't worthwhile -- but the
fact is, most users are not power-users.
Third - Checking an option in the user account that says "Enable Show
Contents Menu" is not a horrible requirement for an advanced user. It
wouldn't prevent either actions described above because I'm assuming
you have admin access to your machine. Are you seriously telling me
that having to check an option when you create a user account is what
you call "a pain in the ass for those who need to go inside a package?"
-- if so, your threshold for what is painful is very, very low.
Personally, requiring me to go into Terminal and type some obscure
command to access functionality, now that's a pain in the ass.
