Perhaps another thing is to include an entry/resource/key in your standard preferences file that, once the file has been licensed, would be removed. If the file is deleted, the activities of the app would replace the old preferences file with a new copy that included the special resource/key that would be a tip off that the app had not been properly initialized. The existence or non-existence of the file would no longer be the issue.
