Using CFPreferences add a value/key to the prefs domain of one of Apple's
application. As long as you use a key that won't stand out like a sore
thumb and won't potentially conflict with something Apple adds, you
should be good to go.
And for extra security, record and restore the mod date of the file when
you write the pref so a casual glance won't show which file you modified.
