Hi -

I'm fairly new to Cocoa and am trying to write a simple programmer's
text editor. My biggest challenge so far has been line numbering.

IDEKit (http://projects.gandreas.com/idekit) does line numbering using a ruler view. It also provides split panes, popup functions, folding, syntax coloring, plug ins for multiple source languages, etc... It's a framework so you can just drop it in (and even override the NIBs to provide a different UI if that's important).
