pesky nib file problems

Has anyone had a nib file fail to load? I made a reference to a
controller for my preferences window from my main controller, and now
my nib file won't load at all. I tried editing the .nib file to remove
the reference to the preferences controller, and I tried a magical
reboot, but both attempts failed. I'll have to rebuild my entire
interface from scratch anyone has an idea of what went wrong and
possibly how to fix it or at least how I might avoid this scenario in
the future.
