You know, I completely missed the fact that he stated he subclassed an NSBox. ;-) I ASS-U-ME'd it was an NSView. I'm wondering what the implications of that are.

Anyone with any insight care to speak up?

What's in the content view of the NSBox? Also, what happens if you remove the NSRectFill call? If the content is black then you'd get the behaviour you are seeing.
