I'd love to be able to do this. It seems that as a programmer you can
disable other elements of the font panel, such as the size and
collections list, but you're always forced to have the "Effects"
controls visible. As a user though you can choose to hide the effects
from the panels cog-wheel menu...
In my opinion it's a poor UI that allows the user to make choices that
are ignored. Unfortunately it seems that the font panel forces a
potentially poor UI on everyone, since you can't disable these effects
controls; when these options are not supported they simply shouldn't be
visible.
For example within Safari's Appearance preference panel you can select
the display font which uses the font panel, so I can apparently set
shadows and colours, however Safari just ignores these choices. If I
can't make these choices then why are they being offered to me?
Besides this one flaw I think the font panel is great - it just seems
to be slightly incomplete.
