the the threading algorithm works, but I assume it's based on the
In-Reply-To header)

From the help text:
"Mail uses special headers in each email message to determine if a message belongs to the same thread. If these headers are not present, the subject is used to determine if a message belongs to the thread."


Is there a way to artificially "reconnect" a thread
that's been lost?
--- I don't think so. You can't edit a received message (this is a good thing, usually).
