As other mentioned it, you need the IOKit for this. Apple provides some
decent examples for doing just that with USB, look at the code samples.
If you don't find them there, you can download the IOUSBFamily sources
from the Darwin sources, the examples are there too.
Now I don't know how to do this with Firewire but I suspect it works
about the same way.
