I don't see the problem. The image is retained by the menu item.

Yes, but the thing is, when using the top command and even Malloc Debug, the memory size increases amazingly. For example, iterating the whole /Applications folder can cause the app to use over 200MB of memory.

Could be that problem is elsewhere, but the path with the biggest memory usage in Malloc Debug, pointed in the direction of menu images.
