getting a program icon to show

I've followed the instructions (they are for project builder, but close
enough I think) but I can't get the finder to show the icon. I've done
a clean on the product, added the icon to the project, set it in the
build target (both by name and by dragging the icon into the little
box), and rebooted the machine.
No joy, it wants to stick to the original (generic) icon.
Any ideas to try?
