NSKernAttributeName ???

Can someone explain or point me to documentation about the
NSAttributedstring attribute NSKernAttributeName ?

I know what kerning is and I know the value of the attribute is a float
packaged in an NSNumber, but I can't find anything about what the
allowable range of values is or what affect they have. I would guess
that negative tightens the kerning and positive loosens it, but
beyond that...
