How to create a horizontal line for a separatorItem

I always thought that the default separator NSMenuItem was a horizontal line, but it is a blank space.
Well, it *is* a line when you create the menu in IB, but its a space when you create the menu programmatically.
I find this not consequent. [NSMenuItem separatorItem] just creates a gap in my menu.

Is there a way to create that line programmatically?
