symbol font (yet again)

I know this has been vexed over before, but is there really no way to enter the symbol font
other than the (really inconvenient) character palette ?

(To those who have a hair trigger on the subject, spare me the unicode lecture, SVP.
I know an "a" is not an "alpha" . I'm looking for a way to type an "alpha".)

I'm still on 10.3.4 but I had a friend who is on 10.3.6 check look also: there
doesn't seem to be a keyboard layout for any symbol font.

Are people who speak mathematics second class citizens ? Surely there are
at least as many of us as there are speakers of Inukitut (who rate three different keyboard layouts).

Anyway, I notice the directories /Library/Keyboard Layouts and ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts so
I assume you can load your own. Anyone know where to get one? Or how to make one ?

TIA

Bob Clair
