It supports a bunch of formats; png is one of them, but ofcourse, gif, tiff, pdf, icns and jpg are also included (and a bunch of others).
-You can specify an extension, but I'd recommend that you don't, because then it'll be easier for you (or perhaps the hacking user) to switch out the images.
