NSButtonCell textattachment

I have a text attachment using a button cell within my NSTextView. The problem is, it doesn't show when it is pressed, the highlighting that is. My idea is that it isn't doing this since the textview itself is not being told to redisplay or the layout manager is not invalidating or something. Does anyone know how I can make it so the button cell shows response?
