For what it's worth, I get this problem all the time on my laptop and never on my iMac or G5. On the laptop it invariably happens when the laptop is on battery power (e.g. the Mail.app noises have a noticeable delay) but when I'm on AC power it can still happen if there have been no sounds recently. I presume that it has to do with the sound system going into some sort of power saving mode.
