New to Objective-C/Cocoa Programming

I recently purchased my first Mac and I am going to develop programs
using Objective-C/Cocoa. There is a "tutorial" at
http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2003/07/22/cocoa_series.html with
the author's purpose to teach just enough C to get us good enough to
start doing "day-to-day" programming in Objective-C. If I need to know
C to program in Objective-C what is the difference between the two and
do they use the same compiler? How do I find out what compiler and
version is installed on my computer so I can look for books to help me
learn the correct syntax?
