I thought that there's some special "status bar" API in Cocoa to handle
hiding/unhiding a status bar and other possible status bar behaviour.
Since most of you suggest to simply put a text field, I guess I need to
handle the show/hide behaviour programmatically in my code. Correct?

He. Never even noticed there is such a beast in Mail. :)
As others already said, this ist just a box with a text field.
Where exactly is your problem?
