Is that with or without the developer tools installed? I'd be surprised if
the shared libraries were missing; but I don't remember the file names.

On Panther Server I have both developer tools and docs installed. The Panther Client machine I have does show man pages for dbopen, btree and hash. They mention "sys/types.h", "db.h" and "limits.h", all of which are on both Server and Client Panther, so perhaps it actually is on the server machine, just without the man pages. (Odd. I didn't skimp on any of the installs.)

Still, seems that it's there all the same on both Server and Client.
(Anyone have a short piece of test code for quick verification?)

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but is there a reason this seems to be such an old version of the Berkeley DB (from '94)? Current version is around 4.2.52. Or do I have that info wrong? (It's good that new versions compile fine under OS X, but it's really nice that it's sitting on all OS X machines right out of the box. Just don't want to write code for the wrong version or whatnot.)

The older version was released under a (IIRC) BSD license. Newer versions have a more restrictive license which stipulates that a (paid-for) license from SleepyCat is required for any commercial use (which would certainly include shipping it with your OS).

This could be a nice option here and there, so I'm very interested in hear experiences others have had using it.
