I really recommend looking at Pantomime to simplify things.

Matt- that's terrible Message.framework is so unreliable! But thanks for confirming.

question: for Pantomime Obj-C sample source code- is it GNUMail.app only, or are there other sample code? Are there Pantomime docs? Pantomime looks sufficiently complicated I don't know if could figure it out from the header files.

So far as I can tell no one answered this so I'll give you what I've found; maybe someone can tell me I'm wrong. The only sample I found was GNUMail (which was pretty easy to parse out but is not in itself documented) and I've found no documents for Pantomime at all which is unfortunate considering what a great piece of work it is.
