How about incorporating either an expiration date or a "no expiration" flag in encrypted form directly into the registration code? Have the app generate its own registration code with an expiration date on first launch. Then if a user asks for more time you can send them a new code that expires in another week or two, and send them a permanent code when they're ready to pay.

As finlay just mentioned, like this: <https://store.omnigroup.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/OnlineStore.woa/wa/ trial?product=1b4d62ab3e657301c697a13a>

I guess omnigroup's licensing includes owner, expiration, and # of seats. And network license checking.
