One application I tried (and later bought) allowed complete, indefinite
use of the program but disabled save, print, and export functions so
that you basically could use the program as much as you wanted and as
long as you wanted, but lost your work each time you closed the
application. After spending several hours using it, I was more than
willing to buy it so I wouldn't lose my work (plus it was an enjoyable
program). The license freed the save, print, and export functionality.
Another had the same limitations, but also timed out every 30 minutes.
That was way too annoying and I passed on it because I could never
spend enough time to get a true feel for the program. Instead, I had to
spend most of the time recreating what I had just lost. Many of the
programs I have used have trial versions that limit the amount of data
you can work with. For example, a GIS program I tried limited the file
size of datasets that could be read/processed. This way one can try all
the functionality, but couldn't do any "real" work on it (no large
dataset anlayses). I really like these approaches better than the
license trial time limit. I can try it out when I have the chance
rather than loading it, opening it, then getting busy with family/work
and when I come back I only have a day or two to try it.
