Main Event Loop.

Hello,
I am just curious what is the easiest way to make an application that is aware of all events even when it is not focused. Something similar to how whenever you press command+space launchbar comes up, but with different types of events. Another thing I would be interested in is programatically finding out which application is focused and somehow communicate with that application to gather data from it (this will probably need to be done with applescript). Any ideas or resources I can tap would be useful.
Thanks
Elfred Pagan
