Chris Nebel at Apple told me to remove from my sdef file the equivalent of
your 'inherits="item"'. It is apparently supposed to be automatic if you
don't specify this. I don't know whether this will help. Probably not,
because the sdp tool will plug the "item" item into the generated files for
you.
