two-part question: stylistic question+joint style

I have a two part question. First off, is it proper style to draw the focus ring around an object when something is going to be dragged on it, or is there some other accepted indication. In address book the image simply receives a normal blue border, as opposed to a focus ring, this is what I plan on implementing unless someone informs me of another method.

Secondly, is there any way to stop stroked squares from being doubly dark on the edges? Does this have to do with joint style?
