Why? I'm not talking about a demon, but a full featured application with GUI. It just doesn't show up in the dock and has no application menu. Instead it might use a statusItem with attached menu. That way the user may choose to open a new window, without the app being active - and under that circumstances the application will not automatically activate when you just send makeKeyAndOrderFront: to the window.
