I like this idea the best. I'd compress it with gzip and then when you install it, uncompress. If it's a bundle, add in tar'ing the bundle first. This way you don't have a much of a space penalty for the setup app to contain the master app and it'll prevent anything from trying to launch it. Until you install it, it'll just be another "resource" in the setup app.
