restricting #of chars entered into a table cell

Is there a way to limit the number of characters input? The data will end up in a database table, with field sizes. I have read through what I THINK are the relevant APIs and have not seen a way to do this.

Nor have I seen it via Interface Builder, unless you can do it somehow with formatters.
