I don't think so.

Apart from the things Glenn suggested, I know of only one reason why this would not work: If your app does not have a menu bar - i.e. LSUIElement is set to 1. In that case you might have to activate your application explicitly:

[NSApp activateIgnoringOtherApps:YES];
