File/Directory Notifications

  • Subject: File/Directory Notifications

Hi List,
I am looking for a notification from the Finder whenever there is a
change to the file system. In particular, I am interested in only specific
files and not the whole file system.

I tried using the FN* API's available in Carbon like FNSubscribe but
it seems that my application gets the notification only when my application
comes in the foreground which is not acceptable to me.

I also had a look at the NSWorkspace class available in Cocoa. I
tried registering for WorkspaceDidPerformFileOperationNotification but I was
not able to get any notification when any file operation was done. The
other method which could have helped me was fileSystemChanged but it seems
to be unimplemented.

I noticed that the finder is broadcasting a notification
"com.apple.carbon.core.DirectoryNotification" whenever a file operation is
performed but could not find any related documentation. Is it undocumented?
Will it be safe to bank on this notification? If yes, can I find out
exactly what event caused the notification, which file/directory was
modified?

Is there any better way of getting this information?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Manish
