Funny you should mention it -- sometimes Mail.app marks my sent
messages as unread, that marks the sent message box as having new
messages, so to remedy this problem I figured I'd just open up all of
them. There were 123 IIRC, and for the next 1-2 hours I could not use
my computer, because Mail.app was in the process of opening windows...

I've had mail do that to me. I think its really sloppy coding. When I've made that mistake, I usually just force quit Mail, that in itself may take 30 seconds to do, but better than an undefined amount of time!

I'm not sure what's going on really when this problem happens. I think it's to do with an excessive amount of RAM used by each window, AND bad VM management by the MacOS. At least the disk churning noise tells me so.
